Union Berlin make Bundesliga history by appointing female assistant coach

Union Berlin have become the first club in Bundesliga history to appoint a woman as assistant coach, after the sacking of Urs Fischer as manager.

Fischer lost his job after a losing run of nine games that has rooted Union to the bottom of Germany’s top flight – quite a collapse for a side that finished fourth last season and subsequently qualified for the Champions League.

The youth coach Marco Grote has been appointed as the interim manager with Marie-Louise Eta making history by becoming his assistant.

Five Golfers Who Can Rally And Win 2024 US Open

First of all, Ludvig Aberg is a star in the making. The 24-year-old from Sweden has had a remarkable start to his professional golf career. Now, after placing second at the Masters, he holds the 36-hole lead at the U.S. Open, a major that’s already chewed up and spit out some of the best in the game.Aberg will win a major during his career. It might even be this Sunday. But let’s not hand him the trophy just yet. Instead, let’s zero in on five players who can rally this weekend and earn a comeback win at the U.S. Open. For this exercise, I’m looking past the low-hanging fruit of Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Cantlay, two elite players in a tie for second at 4 under, one shot behind Aberg. Only players 3 under and lower—guys who’d need to close at least a two-shot gap.Rory McIlro…

ATP roundup: Rafael Nadal reaches first final since 2022

Rafael Nadal reached his first tournament final in more than two years on Saturday, coming from a set and a break down to defeat Duje Ajdukovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the Nordea Open in Bastad, Sweden. Nadal's last ATP Tour final — and win — came in June 2022 at the French Open. After dropping the first set to the Croatian qualifier, Nadal quickly went down in the second set, broken in the first game. But Nadal found another gear, breaking Ajdukovic's serve five times throughout the rest of the two-hour, 13-minute semifinal. "Always it is a great feeling to be back in a final," Nadal, of Spain, said after the clay-court match. "I have won four matches in a row, something I was not able to make happen since two years ago. A lot of things happened, but still in this …

A Good And Smart Preview Of A Wide-Open 2019 WNBA Season

Hockey is almost over, and the NBA is basically done, so now all we have to look forward to over these impending hot summer months is a World Cup, the ability to blast Bad Girls out of our apartment windows, and some goddamn WNBA basketball. That last thing starts tonight, folks! Let’s get to the preview. I’m a stubborn traditionalist when it comes to basketball league alignments, so even though WNBA’s playoff system makes conference affiliation irrelevant, I’ll go through all the teams in the bad conference first (the East) and then the good one after that (take a guess). Teams are listed in order of their record last year, because there’s no way in hell I’m going to get bitten by the same season-preview gimmick that had Islanders fans chirping at me all NHL season. Here we…

Why Your Team Sucks 2016: Arizona Cardinals

Some people are fans of the Arizona Cardinals. But many, many more people are NOT fans of the Arizona Cardinals. This 2016 Deadspin NFL team preview is for those in the latter group. Read all the previews so far here. And buy Drew’s new book here. Your team: Arizona Cardinals. Sure, I guess? Usually, you Photoshop that image into other things. You’ll get the hang of it one day, kids! Your 2015 record: 13-3. Of course, another team in the NFC still ended up with a better record anyway. Because when you are the Arizona Cardinals, second-best is the very best you will ever do. By the way, I know you ended up winning that Packers game, but that’s only because Mike McCarthy is an idiot. When you have one of the better secondaries in football—with or without the Honey Badger—and…

Jose Fernandez Isn't Fair

Here's Marlins phenom Jose Fernandez throwing Troy Tulowitzki a curveball so vicious that it briefly turned the all-star shortstop into an overmatched little leaguer. Troy Tulowitzki is a very good baseball player—too good to get his knees jellied by a curveball—but Jose Fernandez doesn't care about that, because Jose Fernandez is on some next-level shit right now. And it wasn't just Tulowitzki that Fernandez made to look stupid during Saturday's Rockies-Marlins game. Over at Fangraphs, Carson Cistulli points out two more instances from that game in which Fernandez buckles his overmatched opponent's knees with a curveball. Poor Jeff Manship's frightened reaction will make you cringe. [ FanGraphs] …

Who Will Be Playboy's Sexiest Sportscaster In 2008?

AJ Daulerio's Cultural Oddsmaker runs every Friday. Feel free to email him your thoughts. Ladies who someday wish to grace the sidelines of a major sporting event, take heed: Your knowledge is primary, of course, but you'll also have to be somewhat attractive. This is not breaking news, mind you, but each year it seems more and more women are realizing that just because they know how to read box scores or can talk intelligently about a game, they're still required to be completely boneable to the drooling masses. Take Playboy's America's Sexiest Sportscaster award. Granted, it might be an honor that many female sportscasters don't necessarily aspire towards, but consider this: Playboy has no repeat nominees. So, each year, Hefner and company has to find a…

Top 10 NFL Free Agent Quarterbacks

data-mm-id=”_9cpg2ua4f”>The first NFL offseason of the new decade may alter the landscape of the league as we've known it for the past 15 years. Some of the biggest names in the sport's most important position are up for grabs, including the one who many consider the greatest ever to play the game.10. Eli ManningAside from one playoff appearance in 2016, the latter part of the decade for the Giants has been failure after failure, and those two Super Bowl MVPs must seem like a lifetime ago for the younger Manning brother. While he did help end the Giants' ghastly losing streak last season in an emotional home win, there are better free agent options out there.9. Case KeenumThe 2019 Washington Redskins were stacked wall-to-wall with problems, but Case Keenum was among the …

NFL to Agents of Draft Prospects: Make The Bad Old Tweets Go Away

data-mm-id=”_9isqtjle0″>The genre of digging up old, problematic social media posts from people thrust into the public eye has become a go-to rung on the content ladder, even though the enlightened among us realize it's not exactly a pure-intentioned endeavor itself. Still, it persists and will continue to do so as long as internet connections remain intact. So the NFL, seeing the big ol' handwriting on the wall, has gotten proactive in its messaging to the agents of draft prospects. Per Pro Football Talk: “Per a league source, the NFL therefore has advised agents to “proactively scrub” negative tweets from prospect accounts, to ensure that none of these messages surface “during this critical time.””As someone in a 1990s sitcom would say: Uh, yeah, you think? Any agen…

Let Me Dunk on Skip Bayless Real Quick

data-mm-id=”_lcsokz49k”>Skip Bayless is on the verge of flipping on LeBron James. I'm sure of it. The man who has spent the better part of the last decade questioning every move King James makes seems ready to switch sides and start moonlighting as LeBron's hype man. He's been doing it for the last month out of nowhere, even going as far as saying he's "all-in" on LeBron and the Lakers winning the title because of his belief that LeBron is more focused than the rest of the top players. He added to his LeBron-Lakers MC duties today by saying James and teammate Anthony Davis could be the best duo since Shaq and Kobe. Let the dunking begin. "LeBron and AD have the potential to be the best duo since Shaq and Kobe, but they've done absolutely zero tog…
